Community Data Studio
A series of participatory mapping workshops exploring what data is important to residents.
The Community Data Studio was a platform for sustained community engagement that uses design and art to pursue three goals: cultivating critical data literacy, imagining and sharing diverse visions of just data futures, and building data resources for local residents, activists, and organizations.
Three workshops were held throughout the exhibition. Together, participants explored what data they wanted collected, archived, and shared about their communities—and what they wanted kept private. Activities and reflections were scaffolded with prompts such as: What do I want remembered about my community in 25 years? What do I want to know more about my community? What do I want to keep secret about my community?
Participants also created large collaborative maps using drawings, writing, and stickers. Between workshops, materials were publicly displayed in the gallery, inviting visitors to create their own maps and contribute additional reflections.
The Community Data Studio was commissioned by Science Gallery Atlanta as part of the Justice exhibition, March 30–September 30, 2023.
